🌍 Origin:
Doughnuts have a rich history with roots tracing back to Dutch settlers in America and evolving into the iconic glazed varieties popularized in the United States in the 20th century.
🧾 Ingredients Quantity:
For the Doughnuts:
- All-purpose flour – 4 cups (500g)
- Granulated sugar – ½ cup (100g)
- Salt – 1 tsp
- Instant yeast – 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet)
- Warm milk (110°F / 43°C) – 1 cup (240ml)
- Unsalted butter (softened) – ¼ cup (57g)
- Large eggs – 2
- Vegetable oil (for frying) – about 4 cups
For the Glaze:
- Powdered sugar – 2 cups (240g)
- Milk – ⅓ cup (80ml)
- Vanilla extract – 1 tsp
🍽️ Instructions:
1. Activate Yeast:
In a small bowl, combine warm milk, 1 tsp sugar (from total), and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until frothy.
2. Make Dough:
In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add eggs, butter, and yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms.
3. Knead:
Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with dough hook for 6–8 minutes.
4. First Rise:
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1–1½ hours.
5. Shape Doughnuts:
Roll dough to about ½-inch thickness. Cut with a doughnut cutter or two round cutters (about 3-inch outer, 1-inch inner).
6. Second Rise:
Place doughnuts on parchment-lined baking sheets. Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes until puffy.
7. Heat Oil:
Heat oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).
8. Fry Doughnuts:
Fry doughnuts a few at a time, about 1 minute per side until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to transfer to paper towels to drain.
9. Make Glaze:
Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
10. Glaze Doughnuts:
Dip warm doughnuts into glaze, then place on a rack to let glaze set.
✔️ Tips for Success:
- Use a thermometer to maintain oil temperature for even frying.
- Don’t overcrowd the pan to avoid temperature drop.
- Let doughnuts cool slightly before glazing to avoid melting glaze too much.
- Store glazed doughnuts in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
⭐ Serving Suggestions:
- Enjoy fresh and warm with coffee or milk.
- Add sprinkles or chopped nuts on glaze before it sets.
- Fill with jam or cream after frying for filled doughnuts.
