Ingredients Quantity
For the cake:
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- ¾ cup (95g) all-purpose flour
- 6 tbsp (40g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- ¾ tsp baking soda
- ¾ tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup (120ml) milk
- ¼ cup (60ml) vegetable oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup (120ml) hot water or hot coffee (for richer flavor)
For the frosting:
- ¼ cup (57g) butter
- ¼ cup (30g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 ¼ cups (150g) powdered sugar
- 2–3 tbsp milk
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
Ingredients Optional
- Espresso powder (½ tsp in batter for deeper chocolate flavor)
- Chocolate chips folded into batter
- Flaky salt on top
- Berries or whipped cream for serving
Instruction
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8×8-inch (20cm) square pan.
- In a bowl, whisk sugar, flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- Add egg, milk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.
- Carefully stir in hot water or coffee. Batter will be thin—don’t worry, that’s good!
- Pour into prepared pan and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool.
- For frosting, melt butter, then stir in cocoa. Add powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk, beating until smooth and spreadable.
- Spread frosting over cooled cake. Slice and devour.
