Classic French Fries

Description:

Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside—these homemade French fries are the perfect golden snack or side dish. Easy to make with just potatoes, oil, and salt.

Origin:

French fries, also known as “pommes frites,” originated in Belgium or France (both countries claim the invention). They are now a worldwide favorite fast food item.

Ingredients (Serves 4):

  • 4 large russet potatoes (about 1.5 lbs / 700g)
  • Vegetable oil or peanut oil, for frying
  • Salt, to taste

Optional Ingredients:

  • Garlic powder, paprika, or cayenne for seasoning
  • Fresh herbs (like parsley or rosemary)
  • Ketchup, mayo, or your favorite dipping sauce

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Potatoes:

  1. Peel (optional) and cut potatoes into 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick sticks.
  2. Soak the cut fries in cold water for at least 30 minutes (up to 2 hours) to remove excess starch.
  3. Drain and dry thoroughly using a clean kitchen towel.

2. Fry the Potatoes (Double Fry Method):

  1. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large heavy-bottomed pot to 325°F (160°C).
  2. Fry the potatoes in batches for about 4–5 minutes until soft but not browned. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  3. Increase oil temperature to 375°F (190°C).
  4. Fry the potatoes again in batches until golden and crispy (about 2–3 minutes).
  5. Drain on paper towels and immediately season with salt.

3. Serve:

  • Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces.

Tips for Success:

  • Dry the potatoes completely before frying to prevent oil splatter and soggy fries.
  • Use a thermometer to maintain consistent oil temperature.
  • Double frying ensures a crispy exterior and tender interior.
  • Russet potatoes work best due to their starch content.

Recommendations:

  • Try tossing fries with Parmesan and garlic for a twist.
  • Sweet potatoes can be used as a flavorful alternative.
  • Serve alongside burgers, sandwiches, or grilled meats.
