Description:
A moist and tender cake with swirls of vanilla and chocolate batter, creating a beautiful marbled effect. Perfect for any occasion, it combines the best of both flavors in one slice.
Origin:
Marble cake traces its roots to 19th-century Europe, where bakers combined plain and chocolate batters to create visually stunning cakes that also pleased diverse palates.
Ingredients (Serves 8–10):
- 2 ½ cups (315g) all-purpose flour
- 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 ¾ cups (350g) granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
- ¼ cup (25g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons boiling water
Optional Ingredients:
- ½ teaspoon espresso powder (to enhance chocolate flavor)
- Powdered sugar or chocolate glaze for topping
Instructions:
1. Prepare Dry Ingredients:
- Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F). Grease and flour a 9-inch bundt or loaf pan.
- Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt.
2. Cream Butter and Sugar:
- In a large bowl, beat softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 3–5 minutes).
3. Add Eggs and Vanilla:
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Mix in vanilla extract.
4. Combine Dry and Wet:
- Alternately add flour mixture and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with flour. Mix until just combined.
5. Prepare Chocolate Batter:
- In a small bowl, mix cocoa powder and boiling water to form a smooth paste.
- Take about one-third of the vanilla batter and mix it with the cocoa paste to create the chocolate batter.
6. Marble the Batter:
- Spoon half of the vanilla batter into the prepared pan.
- Add dollops of chocolate batter on top.
- Pour remaining vanilla batter over the chocolate.
- Use a knife or skewer to gently swirl the batters together to create a marbled pattern.
7. Bake:
- Bake for 50–60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Cool in pan for 15 minutes, then turn onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Tips for Success:
- Don’t overmix the batter to maintain fluffiness.
- Use room temperature ingredients for best mixing.
- Swirl gently to create a distinct marble effect without blending batters too much.
Recommendations:
- Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with chocolate glaze.
- Serve with fresh berries or whipped cream.
- Store covered at room temperature for up to 3 days.
